The World Bank President Suddenly Resigns

SURABAYAPAGI.com - World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim announced on Monday that he would resign from his position. Kims resignation was delivered after more than six years he headed the international lending institution. World Bank CEO Kristalina Georgieva will act as interim president effective starting February 1, the World Bank said in a statement. Kims resignation from the World Bank was unexpected, because he was appointed to the second five-year term as president of the multilateral development bank in 2016. Kim first became president of the 12th World Bank on July 1, 2012. Prior to taking up the position, he served as president of a well-known academic institution in the United States, Dartmouth College. "It is a great honor to be the President of this extraordinary institution, full of passionate individuals dedicated to the mission of ending extreme poverty in our lives," Kim said in a statement. "The work of the World Bank Group is more important now than before, because the aspirations of the poor are increasing throughout the world, and problems such as climate change, pandemics, hunger and refugees continue to grow on their scale and complexity," he said. Immediately after his departure, Kim will join a company and focus on increasing infrastructure investment in developing countries, the World Bank said, adding details of the new position will be announced soon. rk
