Kim Jong-un Performs New Tactical Weapon Test

SURABAYAPAGI.com - North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is reported to have tested a newly developed tactical weapon. KCNA North Korea’s media reported on Friday (16/11), Kim called the weapon as another display of North Korea’s defense capabilities that developed rapidly throughout the region. This report is the first report by North Korean Government media regarding the development of their weapons program in recent months. "This result today is a party policy justification that focuses on defense science and technology, another view of our rapidly developing defense capabilities throughout the region, and very important changes in strengthening our military combat capabilities," KCNA was quoted as saying. KCNA said the test was successful. Kim explained that the new weaponry system being tested was the weaponry that his father, Kim Jong-il, really wanted during his lifetime. Kim Jong-il has personally led the development process. This is Kim’s first visit to the weapons testing site since his summit with US President Donald Trump in June. The two leaders agreed to work together towards denuclearization and peace on the Korean peninsula, as well as building new relations between the US and North Korea. However, the agreement was not specifically explained. Negotiations also have not made significant progress. Any testing of new weapons carried out by North Korea is likely to increase tensions with Washington. The US says there will be no reduction in international sanctions until North Korea takes more concrete steps to leave nuclear weapons or long-range missiles. The White House has asked questions about North Korea’s latest developments to the US State Department, but has not received an answer. Trump on Tuesday criticized media reports he called inaccurate in reporting that North Korea had not announced 20 missile bases. "I will be the first to tell you if things get worse!" Trump said on Twitter. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was scheduled to meet Kim Jong-un’s senior aide, Kim Yong-chol, in New York earlier this month, but was postponed to later. US Vice President Mike Pence said Thursday (15/11) Trump plans to meet Kim Jong-un again in 2019 and will push for a concrete plan to outline Pyongyang’s steps to end its weapons program.
