Presidential Candidate Debate: Not Just a Debate

SURABAYAPAGI.com, Jakarta - Today is the first opportunity for 2019 presidential and vice presidential candidates. Joko Widodo who is paired with Ma’ruf Amin and Prabowo Subianto who are paired with Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno will clash with ideas about Indonesia’s future. The two presidential and vice-presidential pairs will present their views, ideas, ideas, and solutions to the problems of law, human rights, terrorism and corruption. The four themes have been carefully prepared by the General Election Commission (KPU) to be skinned and further explored in the six debating segments held on Thursday (1/17) night at Bidakara Hotel, Jakarta. KPU claimed that the presidential debate this time was different in format and feeling with the debate that had been held in previous years. The surprise will be displayed since the initial round of debate began. Of the six segments that were held, the first and sixth segments were special sessions on reading the vision and mission which were concluded by the closing statement by each candidate. As the name of this program, the real debate will begin in the second to fifth segments. The four themes - law, human rights, terrorism and corruption - are expected to be explained by each candidate pair in the segment. With an event scenario like this, KPU Chair Arief Budiman promised that this debate would be more exciting from the start. "This debate will be a little different from before. Now, the flow of the debate is far more pronounced," Arief said at the Parliament complex in Senayan, last week. What is the details of the debate? The first two segments are answering questions made by panelists. Candidates can exchange arguments since the second segment. The format was not found in the 2014 presidential election debate. "In the past the debate took place at the end only, now it is from the beginning," Arief said. Especially in the next segment, KPU promises a more contentious debate format. Each candidate will throw questions at each other that can be addressed. There are 20 grids of debate questions in the second and third segments consisting of five questions for each theme. The questionnaire is not a question leak because the candidates actually do not know which questions will come out. In this segment, it is not concerned with how to memorize answers, but to understand problems on certain issues. In this segment, candidates are required to come up with ideas and at the same time be solutive to the problems being asked. The quality of panelist questions is also important in this session. Questions should discuss macro matters, but deepened with specific questions. Examples of the solutions offered by the candidates should be conveyed. Submitting a solution in a simple, yet accurate way will get a positive public appreciation. However, the meticulous way of delivering it so that it seems the solution is ’academic’, will get its own assessment from the public, let alone poor solutions. In the religious, public context was also tested in this debate. A wise adage, "Don’t see who said it, but what was said" should also be a learning material for the public. The community must be fair on the content of the submission of each candidate even though it arises from candidates who are not his choice. The public must admit that bright ideas are not their choice if the answer is better than what the champion offers. Candidates also cannot just talk and give careless opinions. Because, it’s bad on God’s side when you say something, but you don’t do it. Therefore, candidates are required to wisely express their opinions on this debate. Your mouth is your tiger. Promises submitted by candidates will be debts that will be billed by the public. Moreover, in this digital era there is nothing hidden, there is a digital footprint. During this debate, the candidates were demanded not only to indulge in promises and sweet words, but also not to be realized when in power. The presidential debate is not just a debate, but will be a test for candidates how strong they realize it. Statesmanship is tested here. rk
