Generation with the Worst Mental Health

SURABAYAPAGI.com - The American Psychological Association revealed that Generation Z might be the generation most at risk of mental health problems. Generation Z is people born in the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. Psychologist Scott Bea PsyD assesses one of the sources of ’stress’ or the pressure Generasi Z has derived from parents’ experiences when they are young. Bea said Generasi Z passed the 9/11 incident when she was very young, namely 6 years and under. "At that time, media coverage exploded because more people wanted news, and we began to implement safer behavior," Bea said as quoted by the Cleveland Clinic. The large amount of coverage related to security threats in the media makes people often have excessive estimates of a risk. As a result, Generation Z grew up as a generation that gained very strong protection from the environment. When parents interfere too much or protect children from conflict, children cannot hone good coping skills when faced with problems. In fact, the human psychological system can develop ’immunity’ which is better when exposed to problems. "If we don’t let the younger generation solve the problem, to develop an active coping strategy, that means we steal that opportunity from them," Bea continued. Besides being more affected by mental health problems, Generation Z is also known to be more aware of mental health problems. They have more awareness to seek help when they need help regarding mental health problems. "We also have better information about where to get help and whether help is effective," Bea said. rk
